Rotary Club Of Bacolod South Holds Its First Free Legal Consultation

I always carry with me the number of a lawyer so when a legal problem arises I’ll be able to ask for his help and/or advice right away. Unfortunately, the privilege of having a lawyer on hand isn’t shared by everyone, especially the deprived. I guess this is a reality that our society has had to contend with since time immemorial. Pessimists say that they don’t trust the justice system in the Philippines because it only favors the rich and influential, but if we can’t trust our judicial system, then where else can we turn? What will happen to poor but innocent people who have been wrongly accused of a crime? Sadly, many of them just rot in jail.

Hiring a lawyer is expensive, let alone a good lawyer. So it’s definitely a reason for concern or a source of stress if a person cannot afford to pay for one. It’s a good thing that many organizations address this problem and do their part in easing the sufferings of those who need legal assistance but are helpless because of lack of money.

Rotary is a global network of individuals that promote its values of service, integrity, diversity, fellowship, and leadership. Rotary clubs all over the world work together to promote peace, grow local economies, fight diseases, provide clean water, sanitation, and hygiene etc. Rotary is composed of Rotary International, The Rotary Foundation, and the Rotary clubs.

The Rotary Club of Bacolod South (RCBS) focuses on literacy and education but has other causes as well. It provides Free Legal Consultation which is really a big help especially to those who can’t pay for legal services. They conducted their First Free Legal Consultation last August 21, 2017 at SM City Bacolod Northwing. The support of their project partners namely the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (Negros Occidental Chapter) and SM City Bacolod is the reason to the activity’s success. The IBP provided 12 volunteer lawyers while SM provided the venue for free.

The Free Legal Consultation may not be that worthy to some but for those whose lives are in a bind because of legal matters, this is truly a blessing. The Rotary Club of Bacolod South is indeed making a difference in the lives of these people because helping them in their legal dilemmas also means giving them hope. This activity is part of their commitment to uphold and work around this year’s Rotary theme, “Making a Difference.”
