Rembrandt’s full name is Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn. He was born on July 15, 1606, in the Dutch Republic of Leiden. He painted many famous self-portraits, landscapes, historical scenes, and mythological themes in his lifetime.

1. The Night Watch

This is the most famous of all the paintings that were made by Rembrandt. The Night Watch depicts a guild made up of Lieutenant Willem van Ruytenburgh and Captain Frans Banning Cocq. The militia company is painted in what is believed to be a night scene. But after cleaning it in the 1940s, it was discovered that the scene is originally set in the daytime. The Night Watch is currently located in the Rijksmuseum in the Netherlands.

2. The Return of the Prodigal Son

This painting is one of Rembrandt’s final work of art. The famous Dutch painter was touched by the parable of the prodigal son in the Bible. He depicted the figure of the kneeling repentant son in the arms of the father successfully. The face of the father shows compassion and forgiveness. There are other four figures in the painting but it is unclear if which one is the brother. The painting is now housed at the Hermitage Museum. 3. The Storm of the Sea of Galilee

The overall picture of the painting depicts Jesus Christ calming a storm while he is in a boat. The whereabouts of the painting is currently unknown since it was stolen two decades ago. The thieves disguised as policemen to steal the painting in the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum along with the portrait of a Lady and Gentleman – also made by Rembrandt.

4. Self-Portrait

This is Rembrandt’s self-portrait that has two mysterious circles on the background. A lot of theories sprung up about the meaning of the two circles. These can be a kind of map or another symbolic meaning that applies to the time of Rembrandt. The painting was made in 1659. This is one of the best self-portraits that the painter has created. 5. Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp

This painting was made in 1632 and it was commissioned by the Amsterdam Guild of Surgeons. It shows a painting of seven students that appears to be listening to the lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp. The doctor studied the corpse of the dead criminal Aris Kindt. In the Netherlands, there was at least one public anatomy performed on a criminal’s body every year. The painting is currently located at The Hague.
