San Diego Pro-Cathedral Illumination Marks Milestone For Silay City Heritage

The historic San Diego Pro-Cathedral in Silay City took on a renewed presence on the evening of January 12, 2026, as its newly illuminated exterior was formally unveiled. The lighting ceremony highlighted the enduring cultural, spiritual, and historical value of one of Negros Occidental’s most significant heritage landmarks, while also underscoring the importance of collaboration between the church, local government, and the private sector.
Silay City, widely recognized as the “Paris of Negros,” is home to numerous preserved heritage structures, with the San Diego Pro-Cathedral standing among the most prominent. The illumination comes at a particularly meaningful time, as the church marks its 100th anniversary, alongside the 250th founding anniversary of the Parish of San Diego, established in 1776. These milestones reinforce the cathedral’s role not only as a place of worship but also as a cornerstone of the city’s historical identity.
The program opened with a prayer and blessing led by Rev. Fr. Angelo J. Ansula, parish priest of San Diego Pro-Cathedral. In his message, he emphasized the church’s deeper significance to the community, describing it as a symbol of hope, shared values, and unity that has guided generations of Silaynons through changing times.

Silay City Mayor Joedith Gallego addressed attendees and highlighted the importance of the lighting project in strengthening community pride and promoting heritage appreciation. He noted that projects of this nature help preserve the city’s cultural landmarks while making them more accessible and visible to both residents and visitors.
Representing Negros Power, Engr. Bernard Bailey Del Castillo delivered the turnover message, acknowledging the collaborative effort that made the project possible. The lighting initiative, he noted, reflects a shared commitment to supporting local heritage and enhancing public spaces through responsible and purposeful infrastructure support. The project was formally accepted by the parish, symbolizing the partnership behind the initiative.
The highlight of the evening came during the ceremonial countdown, as church members, local officials, Negros Power employees, and residents gathered for the switching on of the lights. Once illuminated, the San Diego Pro-Cathedral stood prominently against the night sky, offering a striking visual that drew admiration and provided a memorable backdrop for photographs.

Beyond its visual appeal, the illumination project serves a broader purpose. It contributes to cultural heritage tourism in Silay City and reinforces the value of preserving historical structures through modern yet respectful enhancements. As the second largest church in the Diocese of Bacolod, after the San Sebastian Cathedral, the San Diego Pro-Cathedral holds both religious and architectural importance within the region.
The successful completion of the lighting project demonstrates how coordinated efforts among faith institutions, local government units, and utility providers can yield meaningful outcomes for communities. More than an aesthetic upgrade, the illuminated cathedral stands as a reflection of Silay City’s enduring spirit, shared history, and collective vision for a future that honors the past while embracing progress.
