Negros Power Supports Coastal Conservation Efforts During World Ocean Day Celebration

Environmental protection took center stage in Bago City as Negros Electric and Power Corporation (Negros Power) joined a large-scale mangrove planting and coastal cleanup activity in observance of World Ocean Day.
Held on June 9, 2025, in Purok Calubay, Barangay Sampinit, the initiative brought together government agencies, private sector representatives, community organizations, and volunteers in a shared effort to promote coastal preservation and environmental sustainability.
Community Collaboration for a Healthier Coastline
Approximately 200 participants took part in the event, demonstrating a collective commitment to protecting marine and coastal resources. One of the major highlights of the activity was the planting of 5,000 mangrove propagules along the shoreline.

Several mangrove species were introduced during the activity, including:
- Bakhaw Bato (Rhizophora stylosa)
- Bakhaw Babayi (Rhizophora mucronata)
- Bungalon (Avicennia rumphiana)
- Grey Mangrove (Avicennia marina)
These species were selected to help strengthen coastal defenses, improve marine habitats, and support long-term environmental resilience.
In addition to the planting activity, participants conducted a coastal cleanup drive, collecting waste materials scattered along the shoreline. The cleanup aimed to reduce pollution, protect marine life, and encourage greater environmental awareness among community members.
Why Mangroves Matter
Mangrove forests play a vital role in safeguarding coastal communities. Their extensive root systems help reduce shoreline erosion, lessen the impact of storm surges, and serve as natural barriers against extreme weather conditions.

Beyond coastal protection, mangroves provide important breeding and nursery grounds for fish and other marine species, helping sustain biodiversity and support local livelihoods dependent on coastal resources.
The planting of 5,000 mangrove propagules is expected to contribute to the long-term ecological health of Barangay Sampinit’s coastal environment while supporting broader climate adaptation efforts.
Environmental Stewardship Beyond Power Distribution
For Negros Power, participation in the World Ocean Day activity reflects a broader commitment to community development and environmental responsibility.
The initiative forms part of the company’s “Ikaw Ang Una” campaign, which promotes programs focused on sustainability, safety, and community welfare. Through environmental projects such as mangrove planting and cleanup drives, the company continues to support initiatives that create positive and lasting impacts beyond the delivery of electricity services.

The activity also highlighted the importance of collaboration among local governments, private organizations, and community volunteers in addressing environmental challenges and promoting responsible stewardship of natural resources.
Investing in a Sustainable Future
As climate change and environmental concerns continue to affect coastal communities, initiatives that focus on conservation and ecosystem restoration are becoming increasingly important.
The World Ocean Day celebration in Bago City served as a reminder that protecting natural resources requires shared responsibility and long-term commitment. Through its participation in the event, Negros Power joined efforts to help preserve coastal ecosystems while supporting a greener and more sustainable future for the communities it serves.
By contributing to environmental programs alongside local stakeholders, the company reinforces its commitment to community development, sustainability, and the protection of resources that future generations will depend on.
